Everybody's got issues, but I'm quite happy with what I see. I am not tall – I was 5ft 4in last time I measured myself, but I am probably smaller now: people start shrinking at 45. But my limited stature used to be my USP, so I haven't got a major issue with it. Although it is bloody inconvenient when I'm out buying clothes or if I want to see over someone's head at a concert.

There is a major turning point in life when you have to decide: shall I grow old gracefully or shall I try everything to stem the tide? For me, that point came in 2001, when I stopped dyeing my hair. I had tried platinum blond and dyeing it back to my natural colour but it came out with a slight green tinge. I had grey stubble and grey in my eyebrows, and I just looked ridiculous, so now I let nature take its course.

I walk on stage at revival gigs and I see people thinking, "Who the hell's that?" I can be playing Wouldn't It Be Good and it all sounds fantastic, but I'm aware I've let everybody down because I don't actually look like Nik Kershaw. 

We've all grown up with George Michael and Elton John, so we've had constant updates on what they look like, but I've taken huge breaks in my career, so every time I come back, I look totally different. I get people tweeting, "Have you still got the hair?" As if I'd be walking about in 2012, aged 54, with a massive 1980s mullet. It's just not going to happen.
