We've become so used to waking up to news of women getting raped or molested every single day in the country, that we are now passive respondents to this horrifying reality. When a Class XI girl student is brutally molested by a mob of 50 men for over half an hour on camera in Guwahati, we form Facebook groups and tweet incessantly, but does that ever lead to any decrease in these crimes? Women in India — irrespective of their social or geographical standing, or irrespective of the fact that this is 2012 — are still subjected to eve-teasing and physical harassment everyday. Read on for the list of horrors faced by women and children in the country in just the first 15 days of July.
Girl is molested in Guwahati (July 13) Crime: A mob of 50 men tried to strip, grope and molest a 20-year-old student in full public view. The harassment continued for 30 minutes and passersby joined in the act. Video footage recorded by a local news channel helped the police make a few arrests. The victim is the daughter of a retired police officer. Where: Guwahati, Assam Current status: At the time of going to press, 12 people in total had been arrested, but the main accused Amar Jyoti Kalita is still on the run.
Handicapped Woman raped, killed (July 13) Crime: Secretary of the Hooghly rehab centre Uday Chand Kumar's close confidante Shyamal Ghosh, a history-sheeter regularly raped and tortured the 50 inmates, the youngest only 15. A 32-year-old deaf and dumb woman Guriya from the centre was sexually tortured before she was killed and buried. Where: Hooghly, West Bengal Current status: Police raided Shyamal Ghosh's home, prime accused in the inmate Guriya's burial case. Apart from Uday and the two grave diggers, police have arrested cook Naznia Khatoon and gateman Madhur Patra. All five were remanded in police custody for 14 days.
Sub-inspector of police molests Dalit woman inside police station (July 12) Crime: Alleged molestation of a Dalit woman by a police sub-inspector inside premises of a police station. Sub-inspector Kamta Prasad Awasthi allegedly attempted to molest Dalit woman Shakuntala Devi at his official residence at Mal police station on July 11 night where he had called her on pretext of questioning. Where: Lucknow, UP Current status: An FIR was lodged against Awasthi and subsequently he was suspended and arrested. Station Officer Mal Rakesh Kumar Singh was also suspended on charges of laxity, whereas circle officer Malihabad Jitendra Kumar Srivastava was shifted to intelligence wing of Ghaziabad as deputy SP.
No Mobiles for Women (July 12) Crime: A khap panchayat in Aasra, just 100 kms away from Delhi, has banned the use of mobiles for women under 40 thanks to the fact that six couples in love from the village eloped and got married. The Panchayat has imposed Taliban-style restrictions on its women, saying they now have to wear headscarves in public, and can no longer go to the market alone. They have also banned non-arranged marriages. Where: Aasra, Uttar Pradesh Current status: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram has decried khap panchayats, saying their edicts have no place in a democratic society and hopes the state will take immediate action against them.
Bank officials molest Minor (July 2) Crime: Bank employees Abhinava Chatterjee and Rahul Sapui molested a 10-year-old girl and passed lewd comments at her mother. Where: Kolkata, West Bengal Current status: Police have arrested the accused.
22-year-old man Molested girl (July 14) Crime: Manjunath Ramaiah, a 22-year-old supervisor at a chewing gum factory was arrested for allegedly molesting a 7-year-old girl when she went for tuition on July 9. Where: Rajanakunte, Karnataka Current status: Police detained the accused and he confessed to the crime.
8-year-old raped by neighbour (July 14) Crime: An eight-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour at Chaman Vihar colony. The victim was on her way back to home from a relative's place at 8:30 pm when he took her to his residence and raped her. Where: Bulandshahr, UP Current status: After a medical check up that confirmed rape, the rapist was arrested.
Minor raped (July 14) Crime: A 16-year-old girl, hailing from Sikar district, had gone to Jaipur by bus and hired a taxi belonging to the accused, Jitendra Banjara, to reach her relative's house. Instead, the driver took her to an isolated location and raped her. He threatened the victim of dire consequences if she told anybody about the incident, and then took her to his native village in Dausa district. Where: Jaipur, Rajasthan Current status: Investigation into the case is on.
