Toughest scene? That's a tough one! I'd say my toughest was the scene in 3 Idiots, where my character is having an argument with his dad. And its not because I had to face Parikshat Sahni, who essayed the role of my character's father.

This was one scene where all the pent-up tension between the father and son had to be expressed. Now, first let me tell you why connecting with this scene was tough for me on an emotional level. I share a very easygoing relationship with my dad. Even my son Vedaant and I are the best of friends. So, my character's repressed ambitions and his inability to express them to his father were completely alien to me.

I was under a lot of pressure. Before shooting this scene, we had shot all the fun scenes with Aamir and Sharman. Suddenly, Raju Hirani (the director) was all set to throw me into the zone of anguished emotional expression.

There was the added burden of knowing that this was the turning point in the film. Everyone on the sets was tense. I was biting my nails. Perhaps Parikshatji drew from his own experiences with his father, as I tried to draw from my own relationship with my father and son. We did several dry rehearsals. Every time we made a note of the nuances.
The highs and lows of the scene emerged with each rehearsal, and merged into my subconscious. Just before the final take, I pushed it all to the back of my mind and just let my instincts take over. Finally, I enjoyed this scene the most.

I will never forget how Raju Hirani, cinematographer Murli and most of the unit were in tears at the end of the scene. It's funny when people react with tears to a scene that the actor is the happiest to enact.
